Sustainable Hospitality

Sustainability here isn’t just a selling point. It’s a structural reality. The property operates using solar panels that capture the energy of the Yucatecan sun, a system that meets all its energy needs without disturbing the silence. A wastewater treatment plant purifies the water, which is then returned to the aquifer. Organic waste is turned into compost for the on-site garden. Even toilet paper—and this detail is significant—can be disposed of thanks to a biodigestion system that processes everything responsibly. In a region where water is sacred and vulnerable, these choices make the difference between what is desired and what is actually achieved.

Azul Nomeolvides: A unique sustainable hospitality experience in Bacalar

Architecture & Sustainability

Located in a humid tropical climate on the shores of Lake Bacalar in Mexico, Azul Nomeolvides is dedicated to preserving the natural environment and employs bioclimatic architectural principles to blend seamlessly with its surroundings.

Taking advantage of the steep slope, the hotel is divided into small modules, carefully integrated into the natural terrain to maximize views of the lake. The layout is arranged in terraced levels, which limits the building footprint to 5% of the site and preserves 95% of the area as green space or permeable surfaces.

The cabin's high ceiling keeps the living space cool. The openings at the apex create a chimney effect, keeping the interior cooler as the hot air rises.

The 60-degree roof pitch results in a 60% to 90% reduction in radiant heat gain compared to a flat roof. Its design also slopes forward to prevent direct sunlight from hitting the south facade, while allowing diffused natural light to enter and providing expansive views of the lake.

As part of the conservation commitment, all existing trees were preserved, and the regeneration of native vegetation was essential to the area’s recovery from previous human activities that had impacted it. Regional resources were prioritized during construction

to ensure ecological harmony with the surrounding environment. The method of building on stilts preserves ecosystem connectivity by creating ecological corridors, as well as providing a natural pathway for stormwater runoff, thereby limiting erosion.

We live completely off the grid, generate 100% of our own electricity, recycle all wastewater, and manage our own waste by composting organic materials and minimizing inorganic waste. We use only biodegradable and environmentally friendly products.

The result is an open architecture that engages in a fluid dialogue with the senses, the earth, the air, and the water that surrounds it.
